Welcome to my “page “Free SEO Tools List – Best SEO Optimization Tools and Top Software you can start using ASAP”.
This is Joanna Vaiou, owner of this blog and an Organic SEO Consultant at my own professional SEO services business, since early 2013.
Even if you are slightly interested to learn how to do SEO yourself and become an SEO Specialist, I am here to tell you that you’ll have to learn how to use SEO Tools. In fact, you will be married to them.
What are the SEO Tools? Definition
SEO Tools are web applications and software solutions that you can use online for many different reasons when it comes to optimizing your websites.
These will make your life easier in your SEO journey from a starter to a professional (if you wish to become an SEO PRO).
There are plenty of categories and different uses of these SEO optimization tools.
For the 1st categorization of these SEO solutions, I will take pricing into account.
SEO Tools Categories (via Pricing)
We have 3 different types of Search Engine Optimization tools by factoring in their cost:
- FREE
- “Freemium” (here the tools offer both a free trial and a paid subscription)
- Paid or Premium
In this article, I will share with you a list of the best free SEO tools, Freemium, and Paid Tools (all 3 categories).
First, let’s see why so many marketers use these tools.
What do people get out of using these solutions (software, web applications, extensions, tools, plugins, etc)?
How Many Different Uses do Free SEO Tools Have?
Search Engine Optimization tools have many uses as mentioned earlier.
Next, I am sharing with you a list of the reasons why marketing people use these tools and what they accomplish through their usage:
- Niche Market Research on Google
- SWOT Analysis (Strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats)
- Keyword Research & Keyword Demand Analysis
- SEO Competition Research & Analysis

- Website Goals Setting & Conversion Tracking
- SEO Project Management
- SEO Client or Employer Reporting
Let’s move on with few details about each of the 15 above uses of the free Search Engine Optimization tools that I will share with you here.
Niche Market Research on Google
An example of doing market research on Google for a specific niche is when we take the main keywords that represent our target project’s products (or services) and type them into the “Keyword Research” or the “Keyword Explorer” type of search box of each SEO tool and draw conclusions about how competitive or not a target market is.
SWOT Analysis (Strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats)
We need tools to see where we stand when it comes to defining our own (and our competition’s) SEO Strong and weak points so we can strategize accordingly in order to strengthen our status and position on Google.
Keyword Research & Keyword Demand Analysis
Analyzing the search demand and competitiveness of keywords in order to define our keyword goals to rank on Google for, is a prerequisite. There are many free SEO keyword research tools that help you do exactly that.
SEO Competition Research & Analysis
SEO Optimization tools give you the opportunity to check what works best for your competitors and what does not. You can use this data later on in order to craft your own SEO content strategy and improve your own SEO health for your websites.
SEO Strategy Design & Execution
Without the useful data of the tools, designing and executing a Search Engine Optimization strategy would be like shooting in blind. You need data to strategize.
Technical Health (Technical SEO Audits / Analysis)
Technical SEO is the part of an SEO Strategy Plan that improves the technical health of a website by minimizing or eliminating technical errors in the code, the pages’ load speed, the website’s architecture, the content’s formatting, and readability, the error pages, etc.
There are some handy free tools that give you a basic idea about some technical fixes you can apply to your websites for free.
Backlink Profile Monitoring (owned and competitive ones)
Backlinks still remain an important ranking factor on Google so it is imperative you have a link acquisition strategy in place for your projects. There are tools that help you monitor your backlink profile as you do your SEO.
As time goes by, you can monitor how your profile changes from your own efforts and of course from other people’s efforts which you can not control.
New Backlink Opportunities Revelation
Some tools give you insights about your competition’s best and new backlinks as time goes by and this can reveal a new link-building opportunity for you if you go and do outreach to the same blog’s webmaster who linked to your competitor and ask for a win-win collaboration with them. This can get you a new great link and increase your SEO authority.
Keyword Rankings Tracking & Monitoring
You can track your target keywords’ ranking on the search engines either manually by typing them in i.e Google Search while in an incognito browser or use free SEO Keyword rank trackers that allow you to track some keywords for no money.
Organic Traffic Progress Monitoring
Monitoring your organic visibility (traffic) and the number of organic keywords that you rank high for on Google and being able to report on your progress is an essential part of your SEO responsibilities.
Website Goals Setting & Conversion Tracking
For each project of yours, you need to set specific goals or KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) that your success will be defined on. There are tools that you can use for free and help you understand how good your SEO is.
SEO Project Management
When you have a lot of websites to manage their SEO it becomes very time-consuming to do and track everything manually. There are free SEO tools that you can use or systems that you can set up to make your management processes work to your advantage.
SEO Client or Employer Reporting
If you do client SEO, or work at an SEO Agency, or do the SEO in-house for one company, you need to be able to report on your KPIs on a regular basis. Free SEO Reporting tools help you do just that and save you time from doing it manually.
