Blogging Mistakes to Avoid

Are Your Ruining Your Blog?

As a blogger, you want the best blog you can have. A good blog will mean more visitors and repeat readers, a lot of shares and more revenue. Even though you want your blog to be amazing, there could be things that you are doing that actually are hurting or even ruining your blog.

Some things that you may be doing to the detriment of your blog (and your income) are more obvious. Some of these things are more harmful. No matter what ruinous thing you are doing, you need to stop it…now! If the following things sound like you, stop ruining your blog!

Do you use the wrong keywords?

The wrong keywords are high competition, short keywords. These are common words and phrases that people use every day. Sure the search engine crawler may notice these words in your blog posts, but you will be left near the bottom of the search results after all of the more popular sites.

Don’t use things like “SEO tips” – too common. Go bigger and more specific like “SEO small business tips for blogs.” Use Google’s SEO tool to find low completion keywords that real people search for to help drive traffic to your site.

Are your URLs yucky?

Your URLs should reflect what your blog and your posts are about. A URL like www.myblogposts.com/page35 doesn’t tell potential visitors or search engines anything about what will be found in your post.

You should use a format where your URLs reflect the post title. You don’t need the date or any other additional data; keep it short at sweet to help get the most out of search results.

Have you gone crazy with the keywords?

Keywords keep coming up because it is a major component of search engine optimization, and you surely know that SEO is a big deal. It is easy to make sure that you have as many keywords as possible to boost your rankings; this means you may even be hiding them in the background!

This is called keyword stuffing. Without getting too technical, it is just something that you should not do! Your keywords should be sprinkled throughout the text of your article just enough so that search engines and readers know for sure what you are writing about. If you stuff, your visitors will have trouble actually reading your posts, and the search engines may blacklist you as this isn’t considered an acceptable SEO technique.

Do you link up a lot?

You may have heard that other sites linking to your site can boost your SEO. This is true, so many people may tend to get links into their blog anywhere and everywhere. Have you traded links with sketchy sites or sub-par blogs? Did you unleash a comment bomb on other blogs, related to your niche or not?

If any of these sounded like you, you are doing linking all wrong. This SEO faux pas probably won’t get you skipped over in search results, but it may not do you a lot of good. When it comes to inbound links, it is quality over quantity – all of those links from low ranking blogs filled with content farm garbage won’t get you any more visitors.

Are you posting regularly, even if you have nothing to say?

Again, with the SEO! It is true that your search results can get better if you add new content often. This means that some top blogs post multiple times a day, and this could mean that you do it too. But what do you post?

A lot of average bloggers can’t think of that much interesting, valuable new things to say that often, so they end up posting drivel. Readers find these low quality posts, and they decide not to come back! Yikes! Make sure each post is a good, quality post; if you really don’t have the time or the ideas, it may be a better strategy to go silent for a bit.
